I stand behind DB83 and usually_quiet's comments and suspicions. I'm trying some add on cooling for mine right from the start. Still, I think more cooling could help extend the useful life of these a good bit. I can't speak for the older units or other MediaSonic devices, but these have a fairly decent heat sink on the main processor which helps. I've noticed that the processor IC runs hot. Then I was able to get them running if I used a hair dryer to heat up the boxes. At first I had to unplug and plug in the power cord several times to get them on. They began by being hard to turn on after they were turned off. The main processing chip inside does run quite warm and the new units have included a heatsink to help with that.īut adding additional cooling "should" greatly help. I do actually have a good bit of electronics experience. I got one more HW180STB box, and it also failed within a year. Then I got two Mediasonic Homeworx HW180STB boxes. When the broadcasts first switched to digital, I got two Zenith (made by LG?) DTT901 converter boxes. But I have some questions about it and the MediaSonic Forum doesn't seem to be accepting new members. So far it's better than I expected and VERY happy with it. Recently purchased a Mediasonic Homeworx HW180STB.
